Jack of all trades, master of none.
You might have heard this. In a nutshell, you can use ‘Generalist’. In this short essay, I’m gonna tell you why being a generalist isn’t enough in this world right now. You need to be a specialist in a few, if not one, and a generalist when many other skills are considered.
When people say that I do a bit of code, a bit of design, a bit of content, this is hard to listen but let me tell you. Nobody wants you on their team. The majority won’t care. When you are sending a cold message, you need to tell them what value you can add to their team. You can’t just say that I will work on all of the segments in their brand, right?!
2 years ago, I was this guy calling me a generalist without having much expertise in any of the skills I mentioned. I was confused with what skill I should specialize in and what not to.
But you do realize that over a period of 3 to 5 years down the line, it's really practical, ideal, and possible to gain expertise on a couple of technologies or topics, and also be decent at a few of the other things or skills. This can make you an ideal guy to be picked up by the startups or the companies you apply for.
Next time, don’t straight away declare that you’re a generalist. Mention the best skills you have and then, tell people that you are also good at some other skills. This way you can get into the leadership roles and delegating positions very soon in the companies as you would be having an idea of the work that every team does. Layman's suggestion to another. All the best❤
